It is my ambition to be a teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I have had very good teachers in my school life, and I am grateful to all of them. But the one who taught us in the tenth standard made the deepest impression on my mind. She was a sweet and gentle lady, and was more than a class-teacher to us. She looked upon all her students as her own children. We went to her with all kinds of problems, and she would do her best to solve them for us. We all loved her as our guide, philosopher and friend.
That is perhaps a personal reason for wishing to be teacher. But apart from that, I think teaching is a noble profession. We look upon all teaches with love and respect. We pay as much respect to teachers as to our parents. We revere our parents as we revere the Three Gems—the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha. It is good to be a teacher in our Myanmar society.
A teacher has definite duties to perform towards his pupils. He must teach them such skills as will equip them for a livelihood. He must guide them by precept and example to bear a good moral character. He must be unstinting in his efforts to impart his knowledge to the learner. He must do all he can to protect his disciple from harm and evil. And lastly. According to Loka Niti the Book of Wisdom, he must direct his student to a higher place of study, or recommend him to a suitable occupation.
Now that we are building a new society, the role of the teacher is still more enhanced. He bears a grave responsibility to train the children and youths of the country on the correct lines. He must inspire them with patriotism and the spirit of national service. He must see that they become good citizens. Good workers and good soldiers that will go all out to serve the country, Myanmar This is the kind of teacher I aspire wish to become.
